NetWorks is a music-generating algorithm based on network theory, complex systems science and the Honing theory of creativity. It allows for an exploration of any type of network connectivity which constrains the flow of information over the network via its nodes.

The pieces in NetWorks 10 were generated with up to eight interacting voices. Depending on the topology of the network, voices can interact with themselves and the other voices through 8 node-types: four for the basic note attributes (pitch, loudness, duration, and entry delay) and four others that control various parameters of physical modelling synthesisers in real-time.

Voices interact such that, for example, the depth of vibrato performed by one voice can influence the duration and the timbral characteristics of a note played by another voice. Voices receive inputs from one another even while silent, and so respond to both past and current events, resulting in expressive, context dependent performances.

Although the rules of interaction between connected nodes are deterministic, the output can sound both improvisational and structured, depending on the network topology and the rules followed.

NetWorks seeks to tap into the ceaseless creativity found throughout nature. Constraints on the connections and interactions between the parts of systems are central to what defines them, determining their dynamics and so how they behave and interact. This is true of the interactions between the entities that make up matter, cells, societies, ecosystems, planetary systems and so on. Constraints are what define, and how we recognize, art styles and musical genres and are key in the process of creation.
